How Many Views on YouTube to Make Money? 2026 Thresholds vs Real Channel Data

Short answer

YouTube pays ad revenue once a channel has 1,000 subscribers and either 4,000 watch hours in 12 months or 10 million Shorts views in 90 days. For long videos, 4,000 hours is about 60,000 views at a 4 minute average view. After that, each 1,000 views typically pays $2 to $8 on long videos and under $0.20 on Shorts.

In our data, none of 49 new AI YouTube channels came close. The best one reached 19,197 lifetime views, 0.19% of the 10 million Shorts bar.

How many views do you need to be monetized on YouTube?

YouTube does not pay by the view until you join the YouTube Partner Program, and it sets two entry points. The lower one unlocks fan funding such as memberships and Super Thanks. The higher one unlocks ad revenue, which is what most people mean by making money from views.

How many views is 4,000 watch hours?

4,000 hours is 240,000 minutes. Divide by your average view duration and you have the views you need. Length is the cheapest lever here: doubling how long people stay halves the views you have to find.

How many views to make $100, $1,000 or $5,000 a month

Once you are in, earnings are views times RPM, your revenue per 1,000 views after YouTube's cut. RPM swings with niche, audience country and video length, so the table runs four rates. $0.16 is a Shorts RPM a creator reported; $2 to $8 is the range monetised faceless long-form channels usually report.

How many views new AI channels actually get

Threshold pages stop at the rules. We looked at what happened next. 49 new channels posted 917 AI-made videos with TaleTok between 2 January 2026 and 16 October 2026, 90% of them Shorts. Together they collected 82,504 views. The 10 million Shorts route asks one channel for over 100 times that, inside 90 days.

Share of channels whose lifetime views passed each mark

100+ views (20 channels)40.8%
1,000+ views (12 channels)24.5%
10,000+ views (3 channels)6.1%
100,000+ views (0 channels)0%
3,000,000+ views (0 channels)0%
10,000,000+ views (0 channels)0%

The best channel got 19,197 views from just 15 videos, each one reviewed by its creator before it posted. The single best video reached 2,322. That is a solid start for a channel a few months old, and still 0.64% of the lower 3 million bar. The takeaway is not that faceless channels fail. It is that the Shorts route is built for channels with a hit, so most new channels should plan around long-form watch hours.

Why mass-posted channels sat at the bottom of this list is covered in our first study, AI slop on YouTube.

The fastest route for a new channel

30,000 views of an 8 minute video beats 10 million Shorts views.

Long videos that hold attention reach 4,000 hours on a few tens of thousands of views, and they pay a higher RPM once you are in. Use Shorts to find viewers, and long-form to get paid.

Methodology and limits

  • Channel totals add up the lifetime YouTube views, as of 31 October 2026, of every video each channel uploaded with TaleTok from 2 January 2026 to 16 October 2026. Uploads made outside TaleTok are not counted, so some channels will have more views than shown.
  • It is the same 917-video dataset as our AI slop study, rolled up to 49 channels. Videos under 14 days old and videos no longer public are left out. Channels are numbered (C01, C02...) and no IDs are published.
  • Lifetime views are not the same as the rolling 90 day window YouTube uses for the Shorts threshold, which makes our comparison generous to the channels.
  • Most channels were new and small. Read this as what typical new AI channels get, not as a ceiling.
  • Thresholds come from YouTube Help (YouTube Partner Program overview and eligibility) and YouTube's Creators earn page, checked on 3 November 2026. RPM rows are illustrative arithmetic using creator-reported rates, not TaleTok data.

FAQ

How many views on YouTube do you need to make money?

To earn ad revenue you need 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 watch hours in 12 months or 10 million Shorts views in 90 days. For long videos that is roughly 60,000 views at a 4 minute average view duration, or 30,000 at 8 minutes.

How much does YouTube pay for 1,000 views?

Monetised long-form channels usually report an RPM of $2 to $8 per 1,000 views, and some finance and tech channels report far more. Shorts pay much less; one creator reported $0.16 per 1,000 Shorts views.

Can 500 subscribers make money on YouTube?

Yes, through fan funding. With 500 subscribers, 3 public uploads in 90 days, and either 3,000 watch hours in a year or 3 million Shorts views in 90 days, you can apply for memberships, Super Thanks and similar features. Ad revenue still needs 1,000 subscribers.

How many views do you need to make $1,000 a month on YouTube?

At a $5 RPM, 200,000 views a month. At $2 it is 500,000, and at a $0.16 Shorts RPM it is over 6 million.
